A look at the 109 local qualifying sites for the 2021 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines

12 hours ago Golf External Newslocal, Open, Pines, Qualifying, sites, Torrey

Qualifying will return for the 121st U.S. Open. The USGA announced on Wednesday 109 local qualifying sites for the championship, which will take place June 17-20 at Torrey Pines South outside San Diego, California.

The USGA canceled qualifying last year because of the coronavirus pandemic and established an all-exempt field at Winged Foot. There were 9.125 entrants into local qualifying for the 2019 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. The record is 10,217 for the 2014 edition at Pinehurst No. 2.

Local qualifying is conducted over 18 holes, taking place April 26-May 18 in 43 U.S. states and Canada.

Players who advance out of local qualifying will join a group of locally exempt players in final qualifying, which will be conducted over 36 holes. Dates and courses will be announced in February.

U.S. travel ban won’t impact players or caddies, PGA Tour says

1 day ago Golf External Newsban, caddies, impact, PGA, Players, Tour, travel, wont

President Joe Biden issued a new travel ban on Monday for all non-U.S. citizens who have been to South Africa in the past 14 days and extended similar bans on travel from Brazil, Europe and Britain that were set to expire.

In an e-mail sent to players on Monday, the PGA Tour said the new and existing bans won’t impact players or caddies, who were classified as “essential personnel” last year and are exempt from the travel restrictions.

“We will continue to process waivers to the travel restrictions to players, caddies, spouses, dependent children, and certain essential personnel as an exemption to this rule to allow entry into the U.S.,” the e-mail read.

The e-mail also reminded players that beginning Tuesday anyone travelling to the United States will need to have a negative COVID-19 test no earlier than 72 hours before departure and that the circuit “will continue to monitor” any policy changes or quarantine requirements.

Tyrrell Hatton officially a top-5 player in the world after Abu Dhabi win

2 days ago Golf External NewsAbu, Dhabi, Hatton, officially, Player, top5, Tyrrell, win, World

Tyrrell Hatton is officially a top-5 player in the world.

Thanks to his victory in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, Hatton moved to fifth in the latest Official World Golf Ranking. The 29-year-old Englishman moved up four spots and is now the second-highest European, behind No. 2 Jon Rahm.

Si Woo Kim, who won The American Express on the PGA Tour, jumped 48 spots to No. 48. It was his first Tour title since the 2017 Players Championship, which vaulted him to a career best 28th place in the world.

Patrick Cantlay, the AmEx runner-up, remained in 10th place, but Aussie Cameron Davis, who finished solo third, moved up 75 spots to No. 147.

It was a similarly big jump for fellow Aussie Jason Scrivener, who leapt 105 spots to No. 114, thanks to his runner-up showing in Abu Dhabi. Rory McIlroy, who finished solo third in the event, dropped one spot to seventh.

Below is a look at the current top 10, with where they stood the previous week in parentheses:

1 (1). Dustin Johnson

2 (2). Jon Rahm

3 (3). Justin Thomas

4 (5). Collin Morikawa

5 (9). Tyrrell Hatton

6 (5). Xander Schauffele

7 (6). Rory McIlroy

8 (7). Bryson DeChambeau

9 (8). Webb Simpson

10 (10). Patrick Cantlay

Tiger Woods, who announced he will be sidelined because of a recent back surgery, remained in 44th place.

Happy Tyrrell Hatton races past Rory McIlroy to win in Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates – Englishman Tyrrell Hatton shot a sparkling 6-under-par 66 in the final round on Sunday to win the season-opening Abu Dhabi Championship by four strokes after overnight leader Rory McIlroy faded with an uninspired even-par 72 to drop into third.

Hatton finished at 18 under par and secured a sixth European Tour title, a victory that will go a long way towards securing a second Ryder Cup appearance in September.

Australia’s Jason Scrivener recorded an eagle and five birdies in a back-nine 29 to claim second place on 14 under, with McIlroy a shot further back following a disappointing final round.

Full-field scores from the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship

McIlroy held a one-shot advantage at the start on Sunday and doubled his lead thanks to birdies on the second and third, but three-putted the fourth and also dropped a shot on the par-5 eighth following a poor drive.

Playing competitor Hatton matched McIlroy’s birdie on the second and also picked up shots on the seventh and ninth to reach the turn with a two-shot lead.

McIlroy looked certain to close the gap when he found the par-5 10th in two, inches closer to the hole than Hatton was in three, but Hatton holed from 35 feet for an unlikely birdie and McIlroy two-putted for his.

A bogey on the 11th dropped McIlroy further off the pace and Hatton made certain of victory with birdies on the 13th and 16th holes.

McIlroy now has four second-place finishes, four thirds and a fifth in his last 10 starts in Abu Dhabi, but will be disappointed at failing to claim his first win since November 2019, especially after starting with a superb 64.

The Abu Dhabi Championship begins a run of three events in the Gulf swing – the Dubai Desert Classic and the Saudi International come next.

PGA Tour bracing for increased international travel restrictions after recent executive order

4 days ago Golf External Newsbracing, executive, increased, International, order, PGA, restrictions, Tour, travel

LA QUINTA, Calif. – As the nation welcomed a new administration into the White House this week, the PGA Tour is bracing for increased international travel restrictions for players and caddies.

In a memo sent to players, the Tour outlines an executive order signed on Friday by President Joe Biden “that may affect travelers coming from international locations.” The order requests some agencies create guidelines to implement the Center for Disease Control’s recommendations on self-quarantine/isolation upon entry into the United States.

The current CDC guidelines recommend those traveling to the U.S. to “stay home” for seven days if they are given a COVID-19 test within three to five days of arrival.

“The executive order does not state with specificity when this determination by the government agencies will be made, but states it should be done promptly,” the memo reads.

The memo also informs players that starting next week those traveling to the U.S. will be required to provide a negative coronavirus test within 72 hours of boarding their flight.

Last July the White House announced international players and caddies would be allowed to travel and compete in the U.S. without delay because there were considered “essential personnel.” These players and caddies were exempt from the 14-day quarantine period that was in place because they were subject to the circuit’s “COVID-19 testing and screening through the Tour’s rigorous health and safety protocols.”

That waiver had become an essential part of travel for many international players like Rory McIlroy who plans to leave Abu Dhabi, where he is leading the European Tour event, on Sunday and travel to southern California to play next week’s Farmers Insurance Open.

Tour to players: No spouses, family members allowed at Farmers Insurance Open

5 days ago Golf External Newsallowed, family, Farmers, Insurance, members, Open, Players, spouses, Tour

LA QUINTA, Calif. – Toward the end of last summer the PGA Tour began allowing spouses and family members of players back at tournaments during competition days as part of the circuit’s graduated return following the shutdown in March.

Those policies, like every other part of life during the coronavirus era, continue to evolve, and players were informed by the Tour on Friday that spouses and other family members will not be allowed on-site at next week’s Farmers Insurance Open “due to the COVID-19 regulations in San Diego County.”

Players were also informed that there will be no workspace available for independent trainers or therapists and that, like this week at The American Express, there will be no indoor dinning for players at Torrey Pines.

California continues to struggle with the pandemic – the state reported 19,673 new cases on Thursday – and there is currently a stay-at-home order in San Diego County. Next month the Tour is scheduled to play events in Monterey and Los Angeles counties which are also under stay-at-home orders.
